Victory for Rushfield Bailey at Olympia
by Malcolm Bewsher

Altrincham Messenger
Photo suplied by Real Time Imaging www.realtimeimaging.co.uk

The ridden Mountain and Moorland Championship held at Olympia London Show produced a panache finish for the Dartmoor ponies for the second year running. Louise Maxwell put in a brilliant performance especially the conformation section to clinch victory riding the stallion Rushfield Bailey by Springwater Happy Day owned and bred by Charlie and Christine anderson from Carrutherstown.

The anderson Family were absolutely delighted to finish on a high note after a long journey from Scotland in the snow. Louise who qualified at the Heritage Championship was a top winner at Great Yorkshire and a top winner in Scotland, besides being placed at the Horse of the Year Show. Jack Starkie, from Bacup, also gave a polished performance with the Yorkshire bred Pumphill Bennet by finishing sixth. Sam Roberts rode Joyce and Jacky Newbery's homebred five year old Newoak Furious by the great Shilstone Rocks Day of Fury to finish eighth in a strong line up. Congratulations also to Colette Green riding Marilyn Parker's Stourton President which had also qualified but didn't reach the top ten.

Well done to everyone this is a great achievement for the Dartmoor Pony World.

BITS AND PIECES - OCTOBER 2011

by Mr. Jamie Sheehy and Mrs. Imogen McKinlay Clark

Dartmoor Pony Best Man Now here is a novel idea of what to do with your Dartmoor pony at the weekend, use him as a best man at a wedding. This picture comes courtesy of Rebecca Penny who took this picture at the wedding of Sarah Challinor and Simon Parker earlier this year with a cameo appearance from Pumphill Buckthorn the reigning Mountain and Moorland Olympia Champion. What a wonderful picture I am sure you will all join with me to wish the couple a happy and prospourus future together.

There was a lovely invitation for a conducted tour round Shilstone Rocks Stud by Elizabeth and Rod Newbolt Young one evening in June. Volunteers from The Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust were invited, a number of which are members of the DPS.
My journey to the Stud took me through some narrow and picturesque back roads near Widecombe meeting some little "lane creepers" (wild ponies who come down off the moor to eat the sweeter grass verges around the village lanes) lucky you can only drive really slowly here as I came across them all of a sudden round a tight little bend close to the farm! When I arrived, there was much excitement as Elizabeth and Alona prepared to lead us up the lane to where the Stallions and colts run together. We saw Snow goose who was caught and stood out for us by Alona looking magnificent! Precipitation was out there as well with five young two and three year old colts that are being run on with hardly a hairsbreadth to choose between them. Lunge Whips added to the excitement as they were used as barriers to keep the boys who are quite friendly at a safe distance from the crowd of onlookers! Next port of call was to see the Mares. As we made our way down the lane again towards the farm we happened across some neighbours of the Newbolt Youngs who were schooling two Dartmoor youngsters in preparation for a showcase and Sale day in July. We eventually arrived at the mares field, where very impressively, they all came trotting over the brow of the hill when Elizabeth gave a shrill whistle, what a sight to behold!
There were foals by Snow goose, Atlantic Gale, Precipitation and North Countryman. Finally we walked across the fields past their lovely little Dexter cows to meet the yearling filly that had been put forward to have her name guessed at the Grand opening day of the Education Centre at Parke. Somebody correctly guessed it as being "Cinnamon" The clue being the fact that she is a lovely liver chestnut! We finished the evening with wine and nibbles in the Barn, where we were also given calendars by Tracy Elliot Reep with wonderful photos of Dartmoor with its native ponies and beautiful rocks and Tors.
It was interesting to hear that the two foundation ponies of this Stud Zippee and the Stallion Silver Dollar were of no known Breeding and had been inspected straight into the Stud Book which was the norm many years ago! Zippee came from Merripit at Postbridge bred by Mr White and Silver Dollar was bred by the Mann brothers at Dunstone farm Widecombe. Two other really important mares bred by the Manns were Fudge foundation mare of the Bovicombe Stud, and Honeybags foundation mare of the Whitmore Stud, both of which were also inspected straight into the book with little or no known breeding! Honeybags's Dam Treacle was inspected on the same day and is also known by her subsequent daughters Plymouth Rock, Mountain Sweet, Toffee II, Syrup and Molasses, all of which were foundation Mares of the Breed post War. By today's standards these ponies would of course not be registered and Silver Dollar would not have had a "look in!" But moorland mares put to Silvia Calmady Hamlyn's stallions were found to produce the goods! I am sure Sylvia would have given her eye teeth to acquire Silver Dollar to run with the sisters of these Stallions, as she knew the combination worked! As far as I know, she never persuaded the Dartmoor farmers to let her have one of their Stallions as they didn't agree with what she was doing! Now we can look back, and though controversial at the time, see that all her efforts and war time protection during a period when feed was on ration and people were restricted as to how many horses they were allowed to keep, in all probability saved the breed! But it is also interesting to know that the Manns still farm at Dunstone and they still have their wild herd of Dartmoor ponies!

Two Dartmoor stallions feature in new publications, my own Foxleat Victory is pictured in The Majesty of the Horse and Hisley Craftsman, owned by John and Diane Jordan bred by the Hisley twin's features on the back cover and on promotional material of a new book called 'The Bitti Chai' which means the small girl in Romany.
John and Diane gave permission for the author Jane Gray, better known to you as Dartmoor pony society member Jane Brown, to use a photograph taken by Allan Brown.
The Bitti Chai is now available through Silverwood Books and Amazon amongst other book retailers or signed copies from Jane herself on her web site www.janegray.webs.com.
The novel is a Young Adult Fantasy novel set in and around Dartmoor but Jane tells me that those who have read it feel it is suitable for any age group, in fact most parents have been reluctant to give the book over to their teenagers until they have finished reading it. It is essentially a love story but it is also about family love and loyalty, prejudice and sorrow. It delves into the culture of a minority race and reveals rites of passage and traditions.
It is the first in a trilogy the second installment The Lost Souls is available during 2012 should time allow although Jane informs me that both Allan and she have missed showing this year due to Allan's accident and so intend to make up for lost time next year.

Foxleat Victory was fortunate enough to be chosen to appear in a forth coming publication called 'The Majesty of the Horse' a beautifully written book by Tamsin Pickeral about many different breeds from around the world. The award winning photographer Astrid Harrison contacted me after seeing pictures of Victory on my website, after checking with the Dartmoor Pony Society she came down and took numerous shots of Victory and chose a stunning head shot which represents the Dartmoor Pony section of the book. The book will be available in the spring via Amazon and other good outlets, although the American version has already been published.

Now what a success the Horse Of The Year Show was for the Dartmoor pony. With the Mini M&M Championship going to Newoak Ballaider bred by Jackie & Joyce Newbury and owned by Anne Cooper and ridden by her daughter Victoria. They submitted this following information and photograph;-
Altrincham Messenger
Victoria McDowall
Horse of the Year Show 2011 held in the LG Arena at the NEC Birmingham. The World's most famous Horse Show. Victoria, age 7 from Hale has had the most amazing season. competing on her own Dartmoor pony, Newoak Balladier (stable name Bob). Victoria last week won the Colne M+M Lead Rein Pony of the Year class and went on to become the Brineton Colne M+M Pony of the Year Champion.
She is pictured with Julie Templeton of the Julie Templeton Show Team who led Victoria and Bob to victory receiving the Trophy and much sought after and coveted prized HOYS Champion Rug.
Victoria, a Y3 student at Bowdon Preparatory School, wishes to thank Mrs Tan, Headmistress and all her team for the support and encouragement she has received from the school. She also says a big thanks to Louise Paterson of Pictus Stud who has been teaching her to ride since she was four years old.
There was huge success for Pumphill Buckthorn owned by Sue Hughes (Parkbourne Stud) and Ridden by Sarah Parker nee Challinor. After being Reserve WHP Champion, Buckthorn went forward to contest the Supreme and after the WHP Champion missed the class Buckthorn was crowned Supreme Mountain and Moorland pony. What a year for the owner after taking the title at Olympia and now this, Buckthorn stood at public stud last year and Sue and Sarah eagerly await the sound of tiny hooves in 2012.
Other successes at HOYS saw Uppacott Mondavi owned by Kim Always and ridden by Charlie Coole was 2nd in their section of the M&M Ridden Pony Of The Year in a huge class, Pumphill Bennet took 3rd, Rushfield Bailey was 4th and four other Dartmoor ponies filled the other places upto 9th!
Briars Amaretto owned by Farraday Suffling and ridden by Jessica Suffling took 3rd in the M&M WHP 122cm class whilst over in the mini classes there was success for Newoak Balladier, Dykes Diplomead was 2nd in the first ridden and Dunnabrook W Woodcock owned by Rebecca Penny was 4th in the lead rein class, all these classes were strongly contested. Finally to the Cuddy Supreme where Moortown Countryman came a fabulous 3rd in the not exceeding 148cm section, many congratulations to the Jordan family.

Qualified For Olympia

Jacky Newbery

First Dartmoor to Qualify for Olympia - From Malcolm Bewsher

The first Dartmoor pony to qualify for the prestigious final at Olympia is the five year old Newoak Furious ridden by Sam Roberts who won the direct qualifier at Kent County Show on Saturday 16th July. Furious bred and owned by Joyce and Jacky Newbery also has qualified for Horse of the Year Show at Three Counties.

The Great Yorkshire Show ridden Horse of the Year qualifier was won by Louise Maxwell riding Christine and Charlie Anderson's Rushfield Bailey which qualified at the Royal Highland Show. The ticket went to Emma Boardman riding Ann Rigby's Dykes Lily Mead.

BITS AND PIECES

I am very grateful to the Dartmoor Society for giving me the opportunity to write the Bits and Pieces Page in its new format as a blog on the Societies web site. Firstly I would like to say thank you to Anne Lampard who has done a sterling job over many years at delivering various news stories from around the Society and I hope I can emulate the success of the Bits and Pieces page in the future. Of course I will need to rely on the Society members to submit information to me which can be emailed to dixieland@hotmail.co.uk.

I have attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show for the past four years and this year we were blessed with a glorious day on the Friday for the In Hand classes. Dunmere Buff Ermine owned by Mrs Beverly Firth won the adult class and was champion with Foxleat Victory second and reserve champion. Mrs Thompsett's youngster Littlebury Flap Jack won the 1, 2 & 3 year olds class. All the youngstock were impeccably behaved.

As a real treat we were graced by the presence of the Queen who came to the collecting ring to watch her Highland win the youngstock class and chatted to numerous Highland owners. This is the first time I have seen her come down to ringside and was fortunate to get a great photograph of her, my 6 year old daughter Isabelle was also thrilled as they had been learning all about the royal family at school.

On the Saturday at Royal Windsor we were not so fortunate with the weather and there were many showers including a freak hail stone storm during the Dartmoor, Shetland & Exmoor Olympia Qualifier. This class was won by Newoak Furious owned by Joyce & Jackie Newbury with Foxleat Victory 3rd and Beaconsfield Precipitation 4th. Other Dartmoor Results saw Pumphill Buckthorn 3rd In the M&M small Working Hunter class and Newoak Balladier 2nd in the M&M Lead Rein and Reserve Champion in the Mini's.

Royal Windsor 2011

I heard from Madge Taylor recently to say that Langfield Beth has finally had a second filly foal after a long string of top quality colts. This was particularly of interest as Langfield Beth was out of the Taylors wonderful mare Langfield Noilly Prat who only had three fillies. Up until recently the female line from Noilly Prat was very thin on the ground as Beth had previously had one filly who has never foaled, the other mares from Noilly Prat were Langfield Prideth whose only filly Langfield Eleanor Rigby had a surprise filly foal in November last year and Uppacott Frascati who had previously had a filly which is in France but fortunately this year foaled a lovely filly hear at Dixieland Stud. Let's hope these fillies can match the successes of the Noilly Prat's boys!

The Newark and Notts Show returned this year as a Star Show and I am pleased to report back that the numbers entered in the classes were very good there were 11 pre-entries for the yearling class, 8 for the 2 & 3 year olds class and 4 in each of the mares & geldings four years old and over and the stallion class. I would like to congratulate Mr & Mrs Jordan with Moortown Countryman who was Dartmoor champion at Bath & West and then went on to take the Cuddy ticket, what an amazing result well done!
Dunmere Buff Ermine won the Dartmoor/Exmoor/Shetland Hoys qualifier at South Of England Show early in June and then went on to take the Championship. Congratulations to Beverley Firth and her team.
The 4 year old Stallion Hisley Silversmith has certainly been making his presence felt also on the showing circuit this year being ridden by Sam Roberts and owned by Jackie & Joyce Newbury he has won the Pure Novice Final at NPS Spring Festival and won the BSPS Winter Champs Ridden Novice, he has also qualified for the RIHS.

A couple of tips that were given to me recently which may benefit some of you;- Firstly if your Dartmoor pony is not shod there is a great product on the market called Keratex Hoof Hardener, it is painted on the base of the hoof every day for a week and then every few days thereafter. It could help with the very hard ground we have seen this spring.
I am always suffering with punctures on my wheel barrows from clearing the fields and have found it extremely difficult to use a puncture repair kit on these types of tyres, I was advised to get a Puncture Repair Foam Inflator which I tried and found it repairs the tyre instead of having to buy a new one!

Imogen McKinlay-Clark forwarded this to me recently:-
"In May we had our annual Bluebell Walk which runs through the woods of two adjoining farms, the cross over point being a hunting gate! The added attraction is of course a pony stud with Whitmore ponies greeting all the walkers as they emerge from the woods! They pass through the fields on their way into the farm yard where they have cream teas, buy potted plants, and get their draw tickets. One of my Stallions Shilstone Hollow Tor comes in to a gated open fronted Barn area where everybody walks through. Being a strong Bay Roan he looks wonderful, almost like metal when he is brushed up! His mane is really long and he attracts a lot of attention particularly from the children as he is so friendly! Sadly this year there was not a foal for them to see. The expectant mother Moortown Serena, strategically placed in a paddock by the drive accompanied by her husband Whitmore Phoenix, kept us waiting till the next day when she had a super filly by him! Too late for the walkers though, who were very responsible about gates as they walked back the way they had come! I was pleased there was nothing to worry about on that score when I went round checking everything before going home that evening."

Finally I received some wonderful news recently from Wendy Watson whose daughter Rachael trialled for a place on the British Tent Pegging Team and was successful, she will be heading off to Durban South Africa on 28th July this year to represent her country along with five other girls and five boys. She was picked after trialling on her wonderful Dartmoor pony Okeleat Jester who I saw a couple of years ago with Rachael practising mounted games, he is a smashing child's pony but unfortunately Rachael does not get to take Jester with her but he played a valuable part in securing her place.
For those of you unfamiliar with Tent Pegging it is a military version of Mounted games, using a lance, sword and traditionally a revolver (although that is not the case nowadays you will be glad to hear)! This is fantastic news and I am sure you will all join me in wishing Rachael the best of luck out in South Africa.

Congratulations to Pumphill Buckthorn for coming out on top at Olympia on Monday 20th December, and being crowned NPS Baileys Champion.

A magnificent result and well deserved for this pony who has done so well in his showing career, owned by Ms. S. Hughes and ridden by Sarah Challinor. He has had a fantastic year.

Also fourth, flying the flag for the Dartmoor Breed, was Rushfield Bailey owned by Mr. and Mrs. C. Anderson having made their way down from a very snowy Scotland.

Very well done to you both.

Lickfolds Snowstorm

Since being crowned the Carrs BMW Dartmoor/Exmoor/Shetland pony of the year at HOYS 2008 and Best of Breed and 5th overall at Olympia horse show, Lickfolds Snowstorm has continued his success into the 2009 season. Owned and bred by Anne and Kevin Lampard and Ms.J.Newbery, and ridden by Molly Simpson, Storm has had a fantastic season so far.

He started off the season qualifying for the Royal International Horse show at Ivybridge, which was then swiftly followed by him taking the In-hand Dartmoor accolade and star rosette at Devon County show, where he also won the Dartmoor ridden for the third year in a row. At Royal Cornwall show, he won the Dartmoor/Exmoor/Shetalnd ridden, qualifying for the Horse Of the Year show, where he also clinched the overall ridden championship of all the sections. At the NPS Championship show, Storm had first day succes winning the NFU Dartmoor ridden class for a second time. Then to top the day off he claimed the Baileys Supreme ridden Olympia ticket.

A week later Storm went on to stand top of the line at the Dartmoor Championship show in the Olympia qualifier taking his second ticket of the year (which could be history?), which was then subsequently passed to Shilstone Rocks Snowgoose standing second. Storm later went on to take the supreme ridden accolade for the second year running.

Dartmoor Pony Society Supporters Group - Extract from August 2008 Newsletter
Mrs. Sue Martin writes : "We are very pleased to have set up the above group for which the main aims will be:

  1. To promote the pedigree Dartmoor Pony, always a good idea.
  2. To provide a greater social side to the Dartmoor Pony Society, this could be achieved by any event an individual wanted to arrange, it might be as simple a coffee morning or a quiz night. Hopefully it will allow members who do not show to have a chance to meet up with fellow Dartmoor enthusiasts.
  3. Any fund raising which arises will be beneficial to the Society, this would depend on the activity, we might not make any profit or we might make a lot. Any money raised would not be spent on the daily running costs of the Society but specific items. E.g. something for the showfield.

Further details will be given at the AGM and in following Newsletters.

This group will be co-ordinated by Sue Martin, she can be contacted on 01822 880223 if you wish to discuss any details or have any ideas. Please check if you are arranging an event with Sue to confirm that you will be covered by insurance and if she needs to arrange a risk assessment form to be completed.

If any member is arranging an event please contact the office so it can be included on this site.

The Society wishes to give Members the opportunity to include photographs of their ponies on this web site.

If any Member has suitable photographs preferably taken by themselves or their family, to avoid problems of copyright, and suitable for inclusion on this web site including the home page please e-mail them to secretary@dartmoorponysociety.com. N.B. no professional photos please.
